Dry Cupping Therapy in Abu Dhabi: What a Session Actually Feels Like

If you’ve ever seen someone with round purple-ish circles on their back and wondered what happened, chances are they just had cupping. It looks dramatic, but the treatment itself is a lot calmer than the marks suggest.

A lot of people in Abu Dhabi ask us the same few things before their first session. Does it hurt? What are those marks? Is it just a trend? So here’s a straightforward walkthrough.

So, what is dry cupping?

Dry cupping is an old wellness practice where small cups are placed on the skin and a gentle suction is created inside them. The skin and the tissue just beneath it get lifted slightly into the cup. That’s it.

The “dry” part matters. Unlike wet cupping (hijama), there are no cuts and no bloodletting. Nothing breaks the skin. If you’re curious about the difference, we covered the centres offering both styles in our guide to dry cupping and hijama centers in Abu Dhabi.

What happens during your session

When you arrive, your therapist will ask where you’re feeling tight. Most people say upper back, neck or shoulders, which is where desk work and phone use tend to settle.

After that, the cups go on. Some stay in one spot for a few minutes. Others are moved slowly across the skin with a little oil, which feels a bit like a massage in reverse, pulling instead of pressing. Your therapist adjusts the suction as you go, so if it feels too strong, you just say so.

Our Dry Cupping Therapy session runs for 90 minutes and costs AED 299. You can see the full details on the Dry Cupping Therapy page.

Does it hurt?

Not really. Most people describe a tight, pulling feeling, a bit like a strong stretch on the skin. It’s unusual the first time, and then it settles into something fairly relaxing.

Where it can get uncomfortable is on very tight spots. A knotted shoulder might feel sharper than a loose lower back. That’s normal, and it’s the reason the suction is adjusted to you instead of being fixed.

About the marks

This is the part everyone asks about. Yes, cupping leaves circular marks, and no, they aren’t bruises from an injury. They show up because of the suction on the skin and usually don’t hurt at all.

How dark they look depends on your skin, your circulation and how much tension was in that area. They normally fade within a few days. If you have an event coming up, say a wedding or a beach day, mention it when you book, and your therapist can plan around it or go lighter.

Who it tends to suit

People usually come to us for:

  • Tight shoulders and a stiff neck
  • Upper and lower back tension
  • Muscle tiredness after workouts
  • General stiffness from long hours sitting
  • A slower, calmer hour for themselves

It’s a wellness treatment, not medical care. If you have a skin condition, you’re pregnant, you take blood thinners or you have any health concern, talk to your doctor first and let us know before the session.

Pairing it with other treatments

Cupping works well alongside massage. A few combinations our clients like:

If you’re not sure what suits you, tell your therapist how your body feels and they’ll suggest a plan. You can also look through all our massage services in Abu Dhabi or check the packages if you’d like to book more than one session.

A few simple tips before you go

  • Don’t eat a heavy meal right before your session
  • Drink some water beforehand and afterwards
  • Skip hot showers and intense workouts for the rest of the day
  • Wear something loose so nothing rubs on the treated area
